Our Curriculum

Knowledge & Life Skill Based Learning

At our school, we believe in a balanced approach to education that combines academic excellence with real-world preparedness. Our mornings are dedicated to a focused academic block, where students engage in core subjects to build a strong intellectual foundation. In the afternoons, learning extends beyond the classroom as students develop essential life skills through hands-on experiences. Whether it's practical problem-solving, financial literacy, cooking, woodworking, or outdoor skills, our curriculum fosters independence, creativity, and confidence. By blending academics with experiential learning, we empower students to thrive in both their personal and professional lives.

Kindergarten through 6th Grade

What does a typical day look like for Roman Avery Students?

Our morning academic block is designed to build a strong intellectual foundation by engaging students in a structured, knowledge-rich curriculum. We utilize Amplify Core Knowledge to immerse students in history, science, and reading, fostering deep understanding and critical thinking skills. This approach helps students develop a broad knowledge base, connecting concepts across disciplines to enhance comprehension and retention.

In mathematics, we use Eureka Math, a rigorous and research-based program that deepens students' conceptual understanding of numbers, problem-solving, and logical reasoning. Through this curriculum, students move beyond rote memorization to truly grasp mathematical concepts, enabling them to apply their skills in real-world contexts.

Technology also plays an integral role in our academic block. Students engage with computers to reinforce their learning, develop essential digital literacy skills, and enhance their understanding of grammar and writing. Interactive tools, educational software, and structured grammar instruction help students improve their communication skills, ensuring they can express their ideas effectively and with confidence.

By combining a rich humanities and science curriculum with strong math instruction and technology integration, our academic mornings prepare students to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve problems efficiently. This solid foundation sets the stage for lifelong learning and success, both in academics and beyond.

In the afternoon sessions, students engage in practical experiences that foster independence, creativity, and confidence. These sessions cover a wide range of essential skills, including financial literacy, cooking and nutrition, home maintenance, woodworking, gardening, communication, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship. Through these hands-on activities, students not only learn valuable skills but also gain a sense of responsibility, teamwork, and self-sufficiency.

By integrating life skills into daily learning, we bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application. Students leave our program with the confidence to manage real-life situations, whether it’s budgeting, preparing meals, fixing household issues, or collaborating effectively in a team.

This holistic approach ensures that they are not only prepared for further education and careers but also for independent, capable, and fulfilling lives.

Preschool & Pre-K Curriculum

Early childhood years are critical to building foundational skills that young children need for success in school and life.

Our program focuses on fundamental competencies and specific knowledge to build foundations for later learning in kindergarten and beyond. Students learn about important people in American history, conduct science experiments, build a strong vocabulary, engage with rich texts, and learn new math skills all in a unique and fun environment.

Our Core Knowledge ELA curriculum has a strong emphasis on phonics. We learn how to listen to sounds around us, play rhyming games, and learn songs. Many of our pre-k students leave our program ready to read or have mastered basic reading skills.

Toddler Curriculum

Our program provides even our youngest students the skills needed to thrive in preschool and beyond including, social skills, pre-literacy skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Students ages of 12 to 24 months are full of activity, movement, language, and initial steps of independence.  Everything can be new and exciting, or a bit challenging and frustrating. We focus on building practical skills, language, social and emotional learning - all with relationship-focused teaching and care for each student.

Students ages 24 to 36 months, become more and more independent when they have opportunities to do things for themselves and have logical consequences. They are learning from their behaviors and choices, trying lots of new things, getting messy, and learning how to clean up. The "I" is strong with this group of students as they begin friendships, strengthen relationships with teachers and learn how to talk and communicate in more sophisticated ways.  We build children's knowledge and give students choices and options to empower them.
